RULING REGARDING WISHING MERRY CHRISTMAS

RULING REGARDING WISHING MERRY CHRISTMAS

Today’s Question no. 1588

Merry Christmas means “Congratulations for being blessed a son to God”. What is the ruling regarding saying it?

Answer

Merry means happiness, Christ means Jesus and mass means gathering.

The entire word means “gathering for celebrating birth of Jesus Christ”. The one you mentioned is not its meaning. However, wishing someone Merry Christmas more or less means the same thing.

The one qho says it will not be considered Kaafir or Mushrik, however there is a danger of saying words which is not allowed and imitating them and hence better to avoid it as he will be considered to commit a major sin.
